Evidence: The Big Picture
WILSON KEHOE & WININGHAM is known for making effective use of demonstrative
evidence to show a jury how an accident happened. Since the mid-1980s, the firm
has also been a leader in the use of the latest video and computer graphics
technology. Videotape interviews and depositions, illustrated brochures, and
computer graphics- all produced by in-house specialists- provide both juries and
insurance companies with a realistic portrayal of the physical and emotional
trauma of an accident. Computer graphics, for instance, allow the firm to scan X-rays,
reenact accident scenes, and animate medical illustrations that vividly
demonstrate an injury or an accident scene.
Everyone says a picture is worth a thousand words. At trial, a picture is worth
a whole lot more! Click on any of the topic areas below to see examples of
exhibits produced by the in-house professionals at WILSON KEHOE & WININGHAM.

Mid-air Plane Collision
This animation was made to illustrate the views available to the two pilots
involved in a mid-air collision in Greenwood, Indiana. The data used in
positioning the two planes was taken directly from the radar tapes supplied by
the FAA. This clip is an exterior view of the collision, but it was also
rendered from both pilots’ point of view.

Occipital Nerve Injection
As part of his treatment for severe headaches following a car collision, our
client received regular painful injections of anesthetic directly into his
occipital nerve. We prepared this combination of live footage, anatomical models,
and animation to illustrate that process. This exhibit proved particularly
effective when we combined it with live footage of our client actually
undergoing the injections.

1966 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race
When our client’s husband was killed by a wheel flying into the grandstands at
the Indy 500, we searched for other incidents of wheels or car debris going into
the stands. We found many such incidents documented in the Speedway’s records
and its film library. The final seconds of this clip of the start of the 1966
race clearly show a wheel clearing the fence, where it struck a spectator in the
back.

Automobile Collision
A police investigation of the head-on car collision that killed the husband of
our client switched the actual pre-collision directions of the cars involved.
Our expert accident reconstructionist prepared an elaborate storyboard of the
true car positions down to tenths of seconds before and after the collision,
from which we generated this animation of three views of accident. It was then
used to convince police investigators they had incorrectly positioned the
vehicles in their reports.

Crane Wrongful Death
A 60-feet-long steel I-beam used in highway bridge construction fell while being
hoisted from a delivery truck and severely injured our client when it fell on
his leg. Numerous issues such as witness sightlines, crane and truck placement,
and the availability of other equipment at the scene necessitated the
construction of this large scale model of the scene.

Aircraft cockpit
To adequately explain exactly why a plane crash happened we took this model of
the plane cockpit into the courtroom. The fuselage was cut from an identical
plane and the cockpit panel reconstructed with photographs.

Tire Blowout
A tire blowout on a local delivery truck caused the truck fall from a highway
overpass after bouncing off of a guardrail. These models were constructed to
explain the actual sequence of events in the accident, and the spatial
relationships between the truck, tire and guardrail. The sectioned semi-tractor
cab was mounted so that it collapsed for easy transport into the courtroom.
