Steel Cable Trap
A farmer angry with motorcycle riders who traveled a path between a public road and his cornfields strung a steel cable across the path between two poles. Our vision experts later determined the cable was nearly invisible against the background of the path and fields. So when our 13-year-old client rode his dirt bike down the path he never really had a chance to see what caught him mid-neck and severed his vocal cord nerves, esophagus, and trachea before it knocked him off of the bike. Although he survived the trap, his next two years were filled with one medical emergency or procedure after another, in a constant fight to breathe, eat, and talk. The case was settled during mediation with the insurance adjuster for the property owner.
